TAISHU ENGEKI
December 12th 2009

"Taishu Engeki" in Japanese means theater for the masses.
Some people call it working-class Kabuki,
and that's exactly what it is.
Most of the actors specializes in onnagata (women's roles).
At a typical performance,
the audience will have some good meals
and drink sake - just having a fine time all around
as they take in a low-priced show.
They get a short samurai play,
maybe a love story and,
for extra measure, a dance or a few schmaltzy songs
known as enka (Japanese soul music).
